Victorian Village Park, across from 616 Adams
Lunch provided, thanks to Charlie Vergos' Rendezvous
In honor of Child Abuse Prevention Month every April, MemphisCASA erects the Light of Hope Awareness Project to bring attention to the issue of child abuse and the need for child advocates in our community. White stakes with blue ribbons attached are planted in Victorian Village Park, each stake representing an abused child who went through the local court system without a CASA volunteer to advocate for his/her best interests. This year, the annual "Stake Day," on which volunteers come out to the park to hammer in the stakes, will begin with a kick-off ceremony. Mayor Wharton and other officials will speak, followed by the planting of the first nine stakes in honor of the nine Shelby County children who lost their lives to abuse in 2009. After the ceremony, volunteers will plant the remaining 3,300 stakes. The sea of white stakes stand throughout the month of April.
Memphis CASA also solicits stake sponsorships during the project to raise funds to provide more CASA volunteers to more waiting children. If all 3,300 stakes are sponsored, Memphis CASA will be able to serve 44 more children! To sponsor a stake or to volunteer on "Stake Day," call the CASA office at (901) 522-0200. |
