Project Description: This Light of Hope (LOH) Awareness Project will serve as a catalyst to bring increased attention to children who are victims of child abuse and neglect. In 2006, 4,658 children came before the Juvenile Court of Memphis and Shelby County as a result of allegations of child abuse and neglect. One in every eight children before the court was appointed a CASA to represent their best interest in court; more are needed. The awareness project will serve as a visual representation of that need. A sponsored wood stake will represent each child’s life.
The Light of Hope (LOH) Candlelight Vigil will memorialize the children who have died as a result of child abuse and neglect in the past year. Both events are in conjunction with National Child Abuse Prevention Month (April).
Goals: To bring increased community awareness to CASA’s mission to provide trained volunteers to advocate for safe, permanent homes for abused, abandoned, and neglected children in foster care or who are at risk of being placed in foster care. And, to move the Memphis and Shelby County community to get involved in the advocacy and prevention of child abuse and neglect.
Location of LOH Awareness Project: Park located directly across the street from Juvenile Court.
Location of LOH Candlelight Vigil: Front lawn of Juvenile Court, 616 Adams Ave.
