Lowe's Heroes Support CASA
January 25, 2008Press Release

On a cloudy Tuesday morning, January 22, three young men who are employed by Lowe’s, Jonathan Harris, Josh Land, and Jay Lowther, arrived at the new CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) office  to work as volunteers, assembling and installing cabinets, installing a refrigerator, and other items purchased with a grant from Lowe’s.  CASA of Memphis and Shelby County recently moved into an office located on the campus of Porter Leath at 868 N. Manassas St.  After being housed at the Juvenile Court for twenty-two years, CASA was asked in June, 2007 to vacate their space due to the necessary expansion of child support services.

Thanks to a generous grant in the amount of $14,600.00 provided by the Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation, and funding from other community partners, renovations were made to an upstairs office in the Administration Building at Porter Leath and CASA moved into the new facility on December 10, 2007.

CASA is a non-profit agency that provides trained volunteers to advocate for abused and neglected children whose cases are being heard in Juvenile Court.  The volunteer acts as the child’s voice in court, presenting an unbiased opinion as to how the best interest of the child may be met.  Because the CASA volunteer works with only one child or family at a time, he or she is often the best qualified to make a recommendation as to a child’s permanent placement.

By supporting local projects like CASA, Lowe’s is not only contributing to a cause that’s important to their customers and employees, but they’re also helping build a stronger foundation for the children who will be tomorrow’s employees, homeowners and community leaders.

Since its inception in 1957, Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation has helped communities nationwide through employee volunteerism and financial contributions.  In 2006, the Foundation supported community and education projects across the country through grants totaling more than $15 million.

When asked why the gentlemen volunteered to work at CASA’s new offices, Jay stated that they enjoy working with others and appreciate the work that CASA performs for the community.  Josh indicated that it was a good change of pace for him and that it was also a good way to teach others and to learn from others.  Josh also stated that they are not only co-workers, but also good friends, and enjoy spending their time helping others.

Lowe’s is a proud sponsor of Habitat for Humanity International, American Red Cross, United Way of America and the Home Safety Council, in addition to numerous non-profit organizations and programs that help communities across the country.  Lowe’s also encourages volunteerism through the Lowe’s Heroes program, a company-wide employee volunteer initiative.
