The Need
The Need Every day there are more than 700 children who enter the foster care system across the nation. In the United States, three children die from child abuse and neglect each day.
In our Memphis community, more than 36 incidences of child abuse and neglect are reported daily to the child abuse hotline and of that number 1 in every 10 are substantiated. There were over 8,000 incidences of child abuse reported in Shelby County in 2007. At the conclusion of FY08, 776 Shelby Co. children were in foster care and in need of a safe, permanent home. Nationally, the average length of stay in foster care is 12 months. In Shelby County, it is nearly 2 and a half years. In 2008, 14 children died as a result of child abuse or neglect in Shelby County.
